Abstract
Introduction: Since 2004 the Queensland Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Collaborative (QOTFC) has focused on the issues impacting on sustainability and growth of quality practice education placements to meet increasing demand for quality practice education from the OT community. Objectives: QOTFC wishes to propose key national strategic directions and priorities to address these issues and shape the future of practice education in Australia. Method: In 2014 a series of workshops designed to formulate strategic directions and priorities to shape the future of practice education were held with key stakeholders from universities and industry. Workshops were informed by a statewide survey of occupational therapists. Results: The immediate need to create a framework for meeting practice education needs into the future was identified. The framework will be presented incorporating stakeholder feedback on: • Effective methods to build capacity of organisations and individual OTs • Knowledge translation from current research into placement models • An integrated research agenda that identifies and distributes criteria for success to drive quality practice education • Options for resourcing the growth of practice education. Conclusion: Immediate attention to address practice education issues at State and National levels is required if the profession is to develop a sustainable, evidence informed and contextualised approach to managing the increasing demands of practice education on the OT community. A framework to shape this attention will align key stakeholders to address practice education issues into the future.
