Abstract

Cultural Studies Curriculum and Pedagogy postcolonialism place based pedagogy Indigenous knowledge decolonising environmental education contact zones
Place based pedagogies often assume that positive regard for the environment fosters pro environmental behaviors. Based on research with the Ngarrindjeri in Australia I argue that engagement with Indigenous knowledge and colonial histories are necessary to decolonize environmental education and generate more nuanced environmental sensitivities. Hybrid tales of a postcolonial contact zone detail the encounter of secret and gendered Indigenous knowledge structures with a postcolonial politics of place to generate new and missed opportunities for intercultural dialogue and place based pedagogy.
