Abstract
The completed and accepted honours thesis that informed this paper presented findings from original research that investigated how and why the Internet is changing the way people gather and consume news. The research essentially focused on factors such as levels of interest in certain types of news, the use of the Internet as a source of news and current affairs, and emerging online phenomena such as customised news-something also known as tailored or personalised news. The rise of "citizen-journalism" (participation of the public in the news process), and weblogs (online journals) were also examined, as they are part of the revolution in news consumption and dissemination. The research employed qualitative and quantitative strategies, and included a specific study of on line news consumption, using a survey and focus group interview. A case study examining the Internet as a crisis communication tool was also conducted. Particular consideration was given to societal concerns surrounding the personalisation of news. The findings provided new data about the on line news phenomenon and added to existing knowledge of Australians' news gathering and consumption. Outcomes of the research will help journalism educators and journalism practitioners better understand the impact of the Internet on the way news is consumed. In addition, the investigation into emergent forms of online news and information enhanced understanding of how the online medium affects communication practises in our society.
