Abstract
Simulation for nursing students has long been used to augment learning and develop skills that have been proven to be a valuable tool in the enhancement of student's learning. It provides an opportunity within a safe, supportive environment to practice nursing skills. Although simulation has been proven to be an effective strategy for both learning and teaching within nursing, simulated models do not provide an opportunity for nursing students to develop and refine communication skills and thus does not adequately prepare them for the context of the nurse/patient relationship. At The University of the Sunshine Coast, standardized patients have been recruited to assist in clinical lab for year one and two students enrolled in The Bachelor of Nursing Science. The University of the Sunshine Coast have people enrolled in University of the Third Age (U3A) defined as ''learning partners over 50 years of age who are committed to engaging in a higher level of education''. These students are asked to volunteer as standardised patients in the clinical lab and are provided with case studies in preparation for assessment within the clinical lab. The U3Avolunteers are valued within the clinical lab due to their maturity, accessibility and the interest they have in learning themselves. This paper will present the early findings of a study, exploring the value of using U3A volunteers as standardised patients in a nursing programme. It will further examine the contribution to students learning relating to communication, formation of the nurse/patient relationship and professional behaviour.
