Abstract
Tourists to the south-west island areas of Thailand were divided into underwater experienceseekers (Surin) and rest and relaxation seekers (Phuket and Phi Phi). Satisfaction with the naturalenvironment correlates with biological and water quality, but negatively with tourist intensity. With a perceived decline in reef quality, Thai tourists would contribute to resource restoration, while international tourists would change their destination preference. Given the economicimportance of international tourism to Thailand, the study area’s tourism dependency on qualitymarine experiences, yet declining reef quality, effortsto abate existing anthropogenic threats mustbe a priority for tourism to be sustainable.
