Abstract

Clinical Sciences bacteriophage
Screening of microbial natural products continues to represent an important route to the discovery of novel bioactive compounds for the development of new therapeutic agents including antivirals. Actinomycetes have been the major source of biopharmaceuticals, and selective isolation of bioactive species has become a target for industrial microbiologists. In this context, bacteriophages have proved to be useful tools in four different applications: • Exploited as naturally-present indicators of under-represented or rare actinobacterial taxa in environmental samples; • Proved useful in deselecting unwanted taxa on the isolation plates in the process of target specific search for rare actinomycete taxa; • Used for the typing of novel isolates; and • Used as indicators of antiviral activity to be screened further in bioassays. Against this background, a number of case studies will be presented to illustrate the use of bacteriophages as tools in drug discovery programs [1,2].
