Abstract
Evolutionary perspectives on the biodiversity importantly include the role of phylogeny in understanding the past and future of biodiversity. The PD phylogenetic diversity measure can help interpret DNA barcoding and similar genomics information, helping to overcome taxonomic and geographical knowledge gaps. PD has become a standard part of the genomics phylogenetic toolbox. The population pressures and fragmented rain forests of South Eastern Queensland highlight the need to extend PD for spatial planning. PD-based dissimilarities have provided largely descriptive ordinations in genomics, but can be expanded to produce useful conservation assessments. The ED method calculates complementarity values, enabling systematic conservation planning, plus distinctiveness and spatial homogeneity measures. ED analyses shed light on the ordination from the DNA barcode library for the South Eastern Queensland rain forest flora, developed by collaborators Shapcott et al (this symposium). This helps clarify conservation priorities from two important perspectives. Places with high total PD may be places that are relatively intact or healthy, providing important functions and ecosystem services. Other priority places are highly complementary, or distinctive, relative to other places in the region. For the SE Qld rain forest, the most diverse rainforest subregion is not the most distinctive.
