Abstract
Introduction: Preschool children with probable developmental coordination disorder (pDCD) engage less frequently in play and demonstrate less developed play-skills in the preschool environment than their typically developing peers (Kennedy-Behr, Rodger, & Mickan, 2011). Methods: A four-week combination of occupational performance coaching (OPC) (Graham, Rodger, & Ziviani, 2009) with teachers and a play-based intervention with three preschool children with pDCD (age range 4;8- 5;6) was explored. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (Law etal 2008) was used with teachers to set goals and evaluate performance. Play-skills and behaviours were measured pre-post intervention using the Revised Knox Preschool Play Scales (Knox 2008)and the Play Observation Scale (Rubin 2001). Results: Significant changes were demonstrated for all three children. Overall play-age increased for each child. Frequency of engagement in group play increased. Amount of time in non-play decreased. Conclusions: OPC combined with a play-based intervention may be useful for preschool children with pDCD, however further study is necessary.
