Mapping how military veterans transition to self-employment
University of the Sunshine Coast
2022
Abstract
The aim of this research project was to investigate how military veterans transition to self-employment and follow entrepreneurial careers. A qualitative approach using semi-structure interviews with 20 veterans and 3 support organisations were undertaken across Australia. We found that military veterans started new ventures in areas of professional services, manufacturing training, and education. These ventures tended to draw on their training and education while serving, gaps they identified, and in several cases from a part-time venture they were involved in that grew. The transitioning process from military services to self-employment was challenging from a personal and professional perspective and most veterans drew on their personal and professional networks. We recommend that tailored transition support be developed for this group and that veterans be supported to think about exiting their ventures from startup.
