Abstract
It is said that we teach who we are and that 'we are' as a result of our lived experiences. Rather than putting to one side our lived experience and who we are as people, this presentation demonstrates how we can use person-hoods to inform a studentcentred, inclusive learning practice. Ratna Paudyal grew up in a remote rural village in Nepal. Both of his parents are illiterate. Among 12 siblings, Ratna was the first in his family to attend university, and he has since completed two degrees. His teaching career in Nepal (1998-2007) spanned kindergarten teaching, primary teaching and headmastership, secondary school teaching and university lecturing. Since 2010 Ratna has taught undergraduate business courses in three Australian universities: University of Western Sydney (UWS), USQ and USC and through his lived experience has learnt that every individual has the capability to learn and succeed in life, and so he works to foster this in his students. Ratna's breadth of experience has provided him with an understanding of students' learning needs and the critical importance of creating strong personal connections with learners. Gail Crimmins grew up in a working class family in South Wales, UK. She too was the first in her family to engage in tertiary education, though she had quite a different experience of life and education to Ratna. Gail has been an educator for over 20 years and has worked in secondary schools, prisons, youth detention centres and universities. She is also a mother of two children. Gail's experience of working with people inside and outside of mainstream education and parenting has fostered a commitment to a person-centred and inclusive pedagogical approach. Ratna and Gail will discuss how their lived experience has informed their teaching philosophy, and demonstrate how 'the personal' is professionally enriching by demonstrating specific pedagogical practices that are informed by their varied experience of learners and learning.
