Abstract
In Indonesia, mental health issues have received limited attention at the levels of policy and practice. Moreover, concepts of mental health are contextualised within broader cultural, spiritual, socio-economic and regional factors that may alter perceptions of mental health and poverty and any relationship between them. This study explored conceptions of mental health and poverty and the perceived relationships between them in a remote region of Indonesia. It was motivated by the lack of health and mental health services in the region and the lack of understanding of psychological factors involved in relation to conceptions of mental health and poverty in developing nations. To examine these issues, Indigenous Psychology was applied as a perspective and phenomenology as the associated research method.
