Abstract

Curatorial and Related Studies Indigenous artwork
Research Background This research contributes to critical understandings of Indigenous Australian art by drawing together major works by internationally recognised Indigenous artists and juxtaposing them with works by important emerging practitioners. The exhibition examines diverse expressions of the notion of 'country' through the comparison of a group of museum quality works which have rarely, if ever, been on public display. The exhibition is presented as a major visual arts component of the nationally recognised Noosa Long Weekend arts festival. Research Contribution The exhibition and catalogue facilitate an increased understanding of stylistic and cultural affinities and differences in Indigenous art through the presentation of a series of major works which have not previously been on public display. It contributes to knowledge of the oeuvre of acclaimed artists such as Emily Kngwarreye, Rover Thomas, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Tommy Watson. In addition the comparison of works by established practitioners with works by emerging artists such as Sally Gabori, Regina Wilson and Patsy Mafura enables an increased understanding of new directions in Indigenous art practice. Research Significance By bringing together major art works not normally in the public domain this exhibition enables increased understandings of ways in which concepts of culture and country are communicated in established and emerging practices, and contributes to knowledge of the oeuvre of significant Indigenous Australian artists. The exhibition is presented as one of the central visual art components of the Noosa Long Weekend arts festival, a nationally recognised event which attracts major international and national cultural practitioners.
