Introduction: Diabetes management is recognised as one of Australia's national health priorities and is increasing in prevalence. Despite the links between diabetes, lifestyle and occupation, there is a dearth of evidence relating the community- based occupational therapy for diabetes. Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectivenessof community-based occupational therapy for people with diabetes and document the types of goals set by clients. Method: Quasi-experimental research using goal-attainment scaling will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the community- based occupational therapy for people with diabetes referred to the Brisbane South Chronic Disease Service. Qualitative content analysis will be used to explore categoriesand themes of goals set by people with diabetes. Results: Goals and goal-attainment scaling from the first six months of the study (December 2012 to May 2013) will be presented. Conclusion: These data will provide initial evidence regarding occupational therapy in community-based diabetes management. Occupational therapists will be better positioned to tailor their services to the needs of people with diabetes.
