Abstract
Along with the current environmental and economic challenges, global population ageing and the associated predicted labor shortage have become national agenda items in many countries. The predicted shortage in key skills areas such as nursing is of particular concern, prompting research into factors that affect retirement and work choices generally and within nursing specifically. This paper provides a broad review of the relevant literature regarding motivation and work choices, which in turn is used to identify the gaps in the literature. This research uses a social capital perspective and aims to determine whether workplace relationships can improve retention of older workers, specifically mature-aged nurses in hospital settings.
