Abstract

Introduction: There are few research studies that have tested the reliability of the Biodex Balance System (BBS) Limits of Stability Test (LOS). This study aimed to test the reliability of the BBS LOS at two time points on two different settings of platform stability. Methods: Healthy adults (n = 26) completed the LOS (levels 6 and 12). Main Outcome Measures: T-tests and Correlations were analysed. Results: Dependent T-tests were not significant (p >.05) for all directional positions except back right (back right12: T = -2.12, p < .05). The Pearson correlation coefficients (r) comparing level 6 to level 12, indicated moderate to good correlations between stability measures at each directional position (rB = .494, rBL = .573, rL = .678, rFL = .653, rF = .427, rFR = .640, rR = .505, rBR = .680, rO = 836). Discussion: These findings indicate the tests are reliable in a healthy population, as performed using the standard protocol issued by the manufacturer. Conclusion: The BBS LOS tests showed good reliability across time points and stability levels, indicating this is a reliable test for both research and clinical testing. Future research should look to define what specific balance constructs are being assessed during the balance tests.
