Aside from the damage caused by COTS, factors contributing to the accelerating loss of coral are the impacts of coral bleaching and the increased presence and severity of tropical cyclones. Of these variables, only COTS can be mitigated by immediate human intervention, so strategic and long-term solutions are desirable. Current COTS control methods are laborious and expensive with extrapolated estimates predicting a decline to less than 10 % coral cover remaining on the reef in coming decades, unless intervened. Knowledge gaps that exist on the molecular regulation of COTS biological processes (e.g. reproduction, feeding, growth) limit the development of effective control methods. As an echinoderm, COTS occupy a unique position as invertebrate deuterostomes and as such may hold critical information in both evolution and speciation of this coral predator. Of the Acanthaster genus there are two species, the A. planci and the Acanthaster brevispinus. Despite the ability to successfully produce hybrid offspring, the A brevispinus does not have an appetite for coral, nor undergo population outbreaks that are characteristic of A. planci. It is theorised that the speciation occurred from the A. brevispinus, yet to the extent of which these species differ is still unknown. Identifying species-specific attributes and unique biological traits will be most advantageous in the quest to better understand COTS and in the development toward biocontrol strategies. By targeting the system that coordinates the biological and physiological functioning of an animal, in this case the neural system, we can narrow down on candidate areas for investigative research. With advances in sequencing and mass spectral technologies it is now possible to study a species at multiple levels, from the gene to the protein. The purpose of this doctoral thesis was to investigate the radial nerve cord (RNC) of the COTS, its neural signalling components (neuropeptides and small molecule neurotransmitters) and candidate cognate receptors.]]> Thu 30 Jan 2020 10:36:32 AEST ]]> Efficiency of Different Machine Layouts for Chain Flail Delimbing, Debarking and Chipping Thu 20 Jun 2019 17:11:44 AEST ]]> Decreasing the Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emissions of Excavator-Based Harvesters with a Machine Control System Thu 20 Jun 2019 17:10:42 AEST ]]> Without management interventions, endemic wet‐sclerophyll forest is transitioning to rainforest in World Heritage listed K’gari (Fraser Island), Australia Thu 20 Jun 2019 16:54:10 AEST ]]> Effects of a mulch layer on the assemblage and abundance of mesostigmatan mites and other arthropods in the soil of a sugarcane agro-ecosystem in Australia Thu 20 Jun 2019 16:53:25 AEST ]]> Forest recovery in an Australian amenity landscape: implications for biodiversity conservation on small-acreage properties Thu 20 Jun 2019 16:06:16 AEST ]]> Optimizing the Location of Biomass Energy Facilities by Integrating Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Thu 20 Jun 2019 15:37:11 AEST ]]> Using Conjoint Analyses to Improve Cable Yarder Design Characteristics: An Austrian Yarder Case Study to Advance Cost-Effective Extraction Thu 20 Jun 2019 15:32:32 AEST ]]> Where Did You Come From? We undertook complete population census and sampling for genetic analysis of a relatively recently discovered giant fan palm, the Critically Endangered Tahina spectablis in 2008 and 2016. Our 2016 study included newly discovered populations and added to our genetic study. We incorporated these new populations into species distribution niche model (SDM) and projected these onto maps of the region. We developed population matrix models based on observed demographic data to model population change and predict the species vulnerability to extinction by undertaking population viability analysis (PVA). We investigated the potential conservation value of reintroduced planted populations within the species potential suitable habitat. We found that the population studied in 2008 had grown in size due to seedling regeneration but had declined in the number of reproductively mature plants, and we were able to estimate that the species reproduces and dies after approximately 70 years. Our models suggest that if the habitat where it resides continues to be protected the species is unlikely to go extinct due to inherent population decline and that it will likely experience significant population growth after approximately 80 years due to the reproductive and life cycle attributes of the species. The newly discovered populations contain more genetic diversity than the first discovered southern population which is genetically depauperate. The species appears to demonstrate a pattern of dispersal leading to isolated founder plants which may eventually lead to population development depending on local establishment opportunities. The conservation efforts currently put in place including the reintroduction of plants within the species potential suitable habitat if maintained are thought likely to enable the species to sustain itself but it remains vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts.]]> Fri 27 Mar 2020 15:58:32 AEST ]]> Root biomechanical traits in a montane mediterranean forest watershed: Variations with species diversity and soil depth Fri 25 Oct 2019 10:08:44 AEST ]]> Draft Genome Sequence of Dyella sp.
