This remarkable survival rate is attributed to both indigenous knowledge, largely in the form of kastom knowledge, and information obtained from a video about tsunamis that was shown in the area three weeks earlier. Interviews with 55 persons who experienced this tsunami suggest that indigenous knowledge about tsunami risk and response in Baie Martelli was well known among key members of the community and was probably largely responsible for the appropriate response. Future strategies for disaster risk reduction should involve maintaining such indigenous knowledge in such communities and supplementing this where needed with scientific knowledge filtered through indigenous culture and language.]]> Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:56 AEST ]]> Recent environmental changes on Pacific Islands Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:41 AEST ]]> Regional coastal susceptibility assessment for the Pacific Islands: Technical Report Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:17 AEST ]]> Geohazards and myths: ancient memories of rapid coastal change in the Asia-Pacific region and their value to future adaptation Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:11 AEST ]]> Value of traditional oral narratives in building climate-change resilience: insights from rural communities in Fiji Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:06 AEST ]]> Islands lost to the waves: how rising seas washed away part of Micronesia’s 19th-century history Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:10:00 AEST ]]> Research Report on shoreline change in the Federated States of Micronesia: Phase 1 – Reconnaissance survey of the coasts of islands in Pohnpei and Yap States Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:09:54 AEST ]]> Spirituality and attitudes towards Nature in the Pacific Islands: insights for enabling climate-change adaptation Thu 27 Jun 2019 13:09:52 AEST ]]> Last-millennium settlement on Yadua Island, Fiji: insights into conflict and climate change Thu 17 Oct 2019 13:29:40 AEST ]]> Social-ecological change and implications for food security in Funafuti, Tuvalu Thu 13 Jun 2019 14:50:59 AEST ]]> Food Purchasing Behaviors of a Remote and Rural Adult Solomon Islander Population Thu 07 Nov 2019 13:08:45 AEST ]]> Echoes from a distance: research into the Lapita occupation of the Rove Peninsula, southwest Viti Levu, Fiji Mon 12 Aug 2019 14:44:39 AEST ]]> Promoting Nutrition Sensitive and Climate Smart Agriculture through Increased Use of Traditional Underutilised Species in the Pacific Fri 27 Feb 2015 13:30:44 AEST ]]> Forgotten citadels: Fiji’s ancient hill forts and what we can learn from them Fri 25 Oct 2019 12:56:40 AEST ]]> A Koronivalu kei Bua: Hillforts in Bua Province (Fiji), their Chronology, Associations, and Potential Significance Fri 12 Jul 2019 14:31:39 AEST ]]>
