- Description
- High-density urban catchments affect the water cycle due to large impermeable surface areas that reduce evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge and promote urban heat island effects. Permeable interlocking concrete pavements (PICP) are one method to reduce these impacts. However, most PICP systems only support groundwater infiltration. Two new PICP systems have been developed that help restore the natural water balance. They do this by storing water in a porous section which increases evaporation after rainfall. The new systems are currently being monitored in Germany and Singapore to evaluate their performance under different climatic conditions (e.g., rainfall and temperature).
