This is one of 11 chapters in a book summarizing the results of 20 years of ex situ conservation, testing and breeding efforts with 11 Pinus spp. in the tropics and subtropics by the CAMCORE Cooperative. Each chapter is devoted to a single pine species (in this case Pinus maximinoi), and follows exactly the same format: (1) Overview - tree description, conservation status, test status, best provenances, suitable planting sites, and advantages and disadvantages; (2) Natural stands - evolution, distribution and seed collections made, climate, soils, reproductive biology, ecology and associated species, and wood quality in natural stands; (3) Plantations - nursery practices, stand management (including site selection, establishment, silviculture, pests, diseases and other limiting factors), and wood quality in plantations; (4) Genetics and tree improvement - provenance collections and variation (including provenance × site and family × site interactions, and genetic parameters), development of improved material (seed orchards and seed production); and (5) Conservation - in situ conservation (conservation status) and ex situ conservation. Information from both published and unpublished observations from CAMCORE members is combined with field observations in natural stands and field trials in order to provide a better understanding of the genetics, silviculture and breeding potential the species. Research results from scientists at other institutions are also included to make the summaries given as complete as possible.
