This Doctorate of Creative Arts submission, ‘Cassandra Austen – Jane’s Muse?’, will comprise a Creative Artefact, the novel ‘Love Tokens’, and an accompanying Exegesis. The submission will demonstrate the relationship between Jane Austen and her only sister Cassandra, exploring the possibility that Cassandra Austen contributed significantly to the writing of certain of Jane Austen’s novels and juvenilia. The accompanying Exegesis will explain the process of creating ‘Love Tokens’ and detail the research undertaken. In ‘Love Tokens’ a researcher claims to have found documents pertaining to the Austen sisters. If genuine, these documents reveal the creative relationship between Jane and Cassandra Austen and propose what may have happened to Jane Austen’s letters. The Exegesis engages with the Creative Artefact to demonstrate the process of creating ‘Love Tokens’ and to provide additional research and justification for the portrayal of Cassandra Austen as Jane Austen’s muse.
Submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Creative Arts, University of the Sunshine Coast, 2016.
