Abstract

Nursing
This paper presents a case study that describes the perioperative care and management involved in the surgical separation of conjoined twins from a nursing perspective. The specific anatomical conjoining of these twins made this type of surgical separation the first of its kind. This discussion utilises the nursing process model to explore the perioperative nursing care assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation involved in the care of these infants. Unanticipated events and their respective management during the surgical separation are highlighted. The importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in the care of two patients simultaneously is discussed and recommendations for future surgical separation operations are proposed
